BUNDI

Sitting on a narrow gorge in the hills and encircled by walled fortifications with four gateways, bundi is one of the most picturesque towns in Rajasthan. The kingdom of bundi was founded by the Hada Chauhans, a warrior clan who originally ruled Ajmer and Delhi. But after their last great ruler prithviraj chauhan was humbled by muhammed ghori in 1193, the haras made their way into mewar and finally settled on the land usurped from Bunda, a chieftain of the bhill tribals of the region. Later, they became one of the closest allies of the mughals and road chhatar sale, the bundi ruler in the 17th century, was so fiercely loyal to the Empror shahjehan that he would not have anything to do with the usurper prince Aurangzeb, in spite of the many temptations offered him. In 1818 Bundi came under the British.
The fine wall paintings and murals done in the distinctive Bundi style are a major attraction of bundi. The town has also been known as a “city of wells”, with a number of ornate step-wells dating back to the 17th century.

  Sightseeing

The magnificent taragarh or the Star fort was constructed by Roa Raja Bar Singh in 1354 AD. The outer fort wall was constructed by Dalil, Governor of Jaipur, in the first half of the eighteenth century, when Bundi surrendered is sovereignty to the Jaipur state.This white fort, perched on top of a thickly-wooded hill at a height of 1426 feet, is one of the major tourist attractions of India. The fort has a very sturdy construction and is extraordinary from the safety angle. It has a huge tank which once supplied the palace with water.
There are many places of interest inside the fort- like the bheem Burj, situated in the middle, which is the highest burj of the fort Closeby. Is a cenotaph constructed Dy Bhai Deva, the brother of Bheem Rao Anirudh Singh

 

RATAN DAULAT (DIWAN-I-AM)
It was a royal court built by maharao rattan singh ji. The Diwan-e-Am was built in such a manner that it forms stables for nine horses and elephants. The royal marble throne is a major attraction of the part.

THE GARH PALACE
This is considered to be one of the finest examples of Rajput architecture, the construction was started by maharao balwant singh. A steep, paved carriage way leads to this palace through the hazari pol or the gate of the thousand. Inside the palace, the naubat khana and the hathi pol are places of spcial interest.

CHATRA MAHAL
This palace was built by maharao shatrusal singh ji the main attraction of the palace is a room full murals in he miniature style. The colour scheme of these paintings are golden and blue.
Besides the courtyard, a beautiful small pool and Hathiya sal (with each one of its pillars composed of four wooden elephants) are notable. Glass and ivory work done on the gates is breathtaking.

NAWAL SAGAR
This square – shaped artificial lake, broken up by islets, can be seen from the fort. A temple of Varuna (Aryan god of wind) stands half submerged in a conner of the lake. The reflection of the entire city and its places can be seen in the lake, making it a unique attraction of bundi. At sunset, the reflection of the rajmahal n the lake is a fascinating sight.

RANIJI-KI-BAORI
Outside the city walls it is a fine specimen of a step-well. It has a high arched gate, ornate with excellent carvings on its pillars. The well has a depth of 46 meters and was built by a rani of the royal house. The architecture of this baori is very typical. The intricate murals on the pillars, torans and gates are wonderful.

MAHAL SUKH
This magnificent summer palace was constructed during the reig of raja Vishnu Singh on the Sagar Lake, amid the lush surroundings of a beautiful garden. It is said that an underground tunnel runs from such mahaql to the old palace.

JAIT SAGAR LAKE
Nestled among the hills, it is a beautiful lake by jaita meena. The fleeting fountain in the night. Terrace gardens and Smriti Kunj are the other attractions of the lake.

PHOOL SAGAR
This palace, built in the 20th century, has an architectural style typical of the times. Presently, it is the home of the former ruler. Prior permission of his secretary is to be sought for a visit.

SHIKAR BURJ
It was the royal hunting lodge. Nestled in the wood, amidst lush greenery, It is a beautiful picnic spot.

KSHAR BAGH
Near the shikar burj is an ancient well-maintained garden, where cenotaphs of the kings and queens of bundi stand in all their rich architectural splendour.

CHAURASI KHAMBOM KI CHHATRI OR EIGHTY FOUR-PILLARED CENOTAPH
This remarkably well-constructed memorial was erected by Rao Raja Anirudh Singh in memory of his foster brother Deva, in 1683. The cenotaph has 84 columns decorated with beautiful etchings and a large shivalinga in the centre.

KEDARESHWAR DHAM (BAN GANGA) (5 KM)
It is one of the most revered places in bundi district, situated in the midst of a valley. The holy temple of kedareshwar mahadev stands on the bank of bans ganga. The water of the nullah running through the hilla were collected to form a kind or reservoir.
The natural beauty and holiness of this place attract people from all over.Kedarshwar temple was constructed by the Rao Raja Kolhan of Bambavada, before the establishment of the Hada dynasty. The shivalinga is constructed within a single stone. The temples of badri narayan and kedareshwar are also built here.

 

RAMESHWAR (20 KM)

Rameshwar - The cave temple of lord Shiva – is surrounded by the Ravalli ranges. It is a beautiful picnic spot amidst captivating surroundings. A water fall gurgles here during the monsoon.

KESHORAIPATAN (45 KM)
It is famous for the temple of keshav Rai ji Maharaj (God Vishnu), which is standing on a huge platform at the bank of the river chambal. The architecture and sculpture of this temple are exquisite. It is an important pilgrim centre for the Hindus. The temple was constructed by maharaja shatru sal of bundi state, in 1610. The ancient Jain tirthankar temple has made keshoraipatan an important jain pilgrimage centre. Famous writer nemi Chandra wrote the renowned holy granth the vrahed dravaya sangrah, in this temple.

The mratunjaya mahadev temple is one of the oldest temple of Rajasthan. Keshoraipatan is one of the oldest towns in India and was known as ashram nagar in ancient times.

RAMGARH (45 KM)
The ramgarh game sanctuary is situated on nainwa road. Permission of department is required to visit this sanctuary.

BIJOLIA (50 KM)
The ancient city of bijolia and frest are located on the bundi-chittaurgarh road. A paved courtyard on the side of the fort has a large temple of lord Shiva in its centre. A carved archway leads to this temple which has a fine image of the elephant-headed ganesh as guardian, at the entrance.

MENAL (70 KM)
Menal lies on the road from bundi to chittaurgarh. It is famous for the complex of Shiva temple, with carvings on the walls of the shrine depicting Hindu deities.

TALWAS (53 KM)
Has a magnificent fort which was built by ajit Singh. Adjacent to it, is the temple of dhooleshwar mahadev and a wonderful waterfall which make the place worth a visit.
Besides, there is the beautiful rattan Sagar Lake which, during the rainy season, is visited by animals like the bear, leopard, and deer. Ramgarh sanctuary is not far from talwas.

DUGARI (65 KM)

This village was established during the reign of the solanki’s dugari is very famous for its beautiful and lovely lake, which covers an area of 36 km .this marvelous lake was constructed in the 10th century when the solanki rajputs ruled here. Hundreds of migratory birds visit the kanak Sagar Lake during the winter months.
The fort situated on the bank of the lake. It is famous for the wall painting which are basd on the bundi style. The paintings are still beautiful and attractive. The palace of Dugari has a beautiful pavilion and gallery of murals, in the miniature style. The walls of the palace are elaborately painted with scenes depicting the raslila- the radha Krishna story. The spotted deer, peacocks, lion and elephants are also painted on the walls. The ram mandir of Dugari is very famous. It has remnants of painting which are more than 200 years old. The garden of dugari is famous for chandan trees. The natural and scenic beauty of the place attracts many visitors.

INDRAGARH (77 KM)

Indragarh town nestles in a narrow valley fortified by huge walls with four gates. This beautiful and chatming town is one of the most importank and prominent historical towns of Rajasthan. it was established by inder saal singh Rao Raja of Bundi state. The fort of indragarh is extraordinary, because the architecture and sculpture seen her is indeed rare and unique.

The town of indragarh and the places nearby are known for the famous temple of mother goddess kail and kamleshwar.

The tank of indragarh is considered to be one of the most attractive places in the bundi district, especially during, during the rainy season.

FAIRS AND FESTIVALS

The fairs and festivals of bundi reflect the vigor and lifestyle of its people.

 1. Tejaji fair (Dugari) (sept.-oct) - This fair is dedicated to the folk character Tejai, large number of people gather here to take a bamboo for their village tejaji temple.

This fair continues for five days.

2. Keshorai patan fair (oct-nov)
The celebrations start on kartik poornima and continues for ten days. Large number of devotees gather here to take a holy dip in the river chambal and pray to god keshav rai ji.

3. Kajli Teej (july-aug)
The celebrations of kajli Teej in bundi is different from the Teej festival celebrated elsewhere in the state. At other places Teej is celebrated on the third day of the month of Bhadra.

4. Bundi-festival, kartik-poornima
The festival starts with the procession of Teej in a decorated palanquin from the picturesque naval sagar and passes through the market culminating At.Azad Park. Cultural programmes are organized in the evening in which local artists and those from Hadoti region perform.

Though the Teej procession is taken out only on two days, the celedrations continue up to the 8th day culminating in janamashtami, the birthday of lord Krishna.
